summer to fall 2!
Just because the dresses above are floral, doesn't mean they're not on trend for fall. They are! Just add a few key pieces and accessories, and you've got a whole new look. No need to stash them away until next summer!
The look on the left I've put together for work: the pretty floral pattern is made more work-appropriate with an on-trend eggshell blazer and metallic oxfords. Finally, pull the look together with a skinny leather belt at your waist, and a chunky necklace.
The look on the right would be the perfect date look! Pull the rich color of the floral pattern and pair with a complimentary blazer (or cardigan). Add opaque black tights (or patterned, if you feel even more daring!), and chunky booties. The mix of feminine/tough is VERY now. Pile on the accessories and you're ready for whatever your night has to offer. Date.. or girls night!
Looking the part!
The office I'm currently employed at is "business casual" ..which loosely translates (in this office, at least) to "whatever you want within reason..no jeans, no shorts, and no flip flops". The new position, however, is a promotion with a higher title AND a higher dress code. I am to dress as a "business professional".
Sure, I have plenty of trousers and a few blazers...and a lot of dresses...but none I feel really fit the "business professional" description. I want to (literally) dress to impress! And honestly, Tampa may not be NYC but it's a LOT more chic than the current city I live in, and I want to do my part to add to the chic-ness!
Above I've created a couple of examples of how I'd like to dress for my new life. I could have gone on and on for days..I have lots of ideas! I decided to showcase some of my favorite trends, like color blocking, rich colors, and bold prints. I could see how it would be quite easy to get in a fashion 'rut' with the "business professional" standard. But I refuse to let that happen!
How do you dress for the office? What are your favorite pieces to wear to work?
As always, thanks for reading!
xoxo :)
thrifty chic!
Not sure about you guys, but the 'thrift-store-chic' trend initially did nothing for me. I had no interest in picking out pre-worn items...and besides, I felt 'if the owner didn't want them, why would I?!'
But through much research, I now 'get it'...and I want you all to embrace this too!
Below are some tips I feel will help the fashionable lady shop at thrift stores! (including Goodwill and the Salvation Army!)
First, the reasons why you should shop for trendy items at thrift stores is really quite obvious: trends are just that: something that won't necessarily be in style next month! No reason to spend $30 for something you could potentially find for 90% less!
tip #1) shop for what's on trend right now. it's true that 'everything old becomes new again'. Menswear style blouses, pencil skirts, harem pants, and high waisted trousers are on everyone's 'fall must-haves' list, but they were also popular in the 70's and 80's. Make a list of items you hope you find at said thrift store, and bring it with you. Take the time to search, and then try on your finds. Remember, if you find a blazer you MUST have (at a great price point!) and it's inexpensive but a little too large, you can always have it tailored.
tip #2) ALWAYS try ALL items on. you can't return things to a thrift store, so you need to know exactly what you're working with. Perhaps you try it on and notice a small hole, or a stain you didn't see before. Evaluate what you would wear with each piece you pick up...a $5 blouse is not such a great steal if you never wear it. Also, be mindful of sizing differences. For example, current clothing is looser fitting now than it was in previous decades. In other words, you may be a larger size in 'vintage' pieces!
tip #3) find a good thrift store. Most thrift stores are clean and rotate their stock often. Take a couple of weekends to find your favorite thrift store. Get to know the staff, and they may even let you know when a new shipment of goodies comes in!
tip #4) shop with someone. If you're anything like me, you can get excited about something and then "have to have" it. Having someone with you can give you another set of eyes AND opinions. "will you wear that?" or "that color is no good on you". Bring your best friend or enjoy a Saturday afternoon with your mom. Make a day of it and make it fun!
tip #5) look for items with tags still on! If you're on the hunt for something current, look for items with the tags still on it. I've given a LOT of things to Goodwill or other thrift stores that I've never worn, tags attached and all. I'm sure I'm not the only one! As with anything though, make sure to try it on!
tip #6) wash all clothes as soon as you get home. <<- no brainer. :)
tip #7) for every item you buy from a thrift store, agree to give them an item from your closet. Especially if thrifting becomes a habit...share the love!
hope you found this informative and helpful!
enjoy your day!

from summer to fall
just a quick blog post on how to take your summer favorites into fall!
This blue and white striped tank can easily go from skirts and sandals to velvet pants and boots! Add a pop of color with a bright cardigan, or, as shown here, a great fitted blazer and scarf!
moral of the story: don't pack away your summer staples just because the weather is changing! (well, it's changing for some of you - Florida's weather never changes!)
hope you're all enjoying your day! thanks for reading! :)

look for less: Kim Kardashian!
I love Kim Kardashian's casual look in this picture...but I added a bit more playfulness to it with the Hello Kitty tank (i have to have this). To me, the real statement maker in this look is her Hermes bag...but I played along and kept each piece under $50...and i have to say, i like 'steal' bag as well! Her look retail is well over $4,000 (yes, I'm serious). There's no reason to pay celeb prices when you can get the look for less! :)
requested: for curvy girls!
fall 2011: color
for my second entry on all things Fall Fashion, we're talking color! Bright, jewel-toned, un-shy color.
The biggest trend among fall fashion colors is mustard yellow. It was on every great designers runway..from accessories to bold coats. For my skin tone (fair with pink-ish undertones) it's a difficult color for me to wear. It works best head to toe with darker, tan skin tones or olive complexions. Still want to rock this color at school or in the office? Easy! Just pair a mustard-yellow skirt with a cream or brown blouse...or navy (an unexpected and very fresh alternative to neutral!). The key is to keep an uncomplimentary color away from your face. Adding it on the bottom will be a great way to wear the trend without looking washed out. Still not sure? grab a belt or a bag in the color, and use it to accessorize!

Rodarte, Fall 2011 runway |
Mustard not your thing? How about Crimson?! Such a beautifully rich color, and in my opinion easier to wear. This bold shade was featured on the Rodarte runway and all over celebrities. My favorite piece is the red dress above (by Diane Von Furstenburg)...so easy to wear, so versatile! I haven't found one yet, but i'm on the hunt for a lower cost dupe for this dress. You can wear it now and still wear it in December and January! This color will still be on trend for winter!

finally, sapphire blue will be seen on fashionista's all over the world this fall. it's blue shade with lavender undertones is flattering for a wide range of people, and it's dark color camouflages imperfections, much like black will (but sapphire is far more chic!) i LOVE the sequin mini (shown above) for a fun night out...pair it with a simple white tee and heels!
As with all of these color trends, if you're on a tight budget, or are unsure how confident you feel wearing A LOT of a certain color, accessorize with it! There's also no reason to be a slave to trends, no matter what they may be, if you feel uncomfortable wearing it. You wear the clothes, don't let the clothes wear you!
until next time! xoxo!

friday faves!
purple liner: makes green eyes look greener, and blue eyes look bluer! Plus, it's a great alternative to the usual black or brown. Just make sure it's a deep, rich purple! (good buy: E.L.F shadow and liner stick in plum/purple, $3, eyeslipsface.com
feather extensions (in funky colors!): i was hesitant about these, the very idea scared me. BUT, if you know me you know i change up my hair ALL the time (literally every appointment, my stylist loves me...never get in a rut! haha) So i gave these a shot. I was planning on getting a shade that would easily "disappear" into my hair, but fell in love with an electric blue/turquoise combination and had to have it. It's far enough back and behind other hair (near my ear) that i can easily hide it for work (if necessary), but also very easy to show off. The best part: there's NO damage done to your hair, you can wash it, blow it dry, flat iron it, or even curl it! I plan on keeping mine until my next appointment...just in time for fall...and probably my next hair color. ;)
'drybars': I've heard about salons that only offer styling services in big cities and metro areas. Needless to say, i don't have any where i live. BUT, there's a great one in Tampa called Blowbar. (check out their website, and even make an appointment, here!) The moment i walked in, i was in love. this place is SO me! Everything in the room is black, white, or pink. It's trendy, chic, and cool, but the stylists working there seem down to earth, friendly, and super talented! i got my hair done for a party and was blown away (no pun intended) at the results...using NOTHING but a hairbrush, some hair products, and a blow dryer! My hair is very curly, and for that to be done in 45 minutes using just those products, i was amazed. And hooked. at $25-40, it's not cheap...but great for big nights out when you want to look fab but don't feel like doing your own hair. (my hair would never look that good if i did it myself..lol). Also great to do for a fun night out with girlfriends...make that part of your girls night!
maxi dresses: i think of them as fabulous versions of pajamas. They are SO comfortable, SO forgiving, and flattering...throw one on to go out shopping or to lunch, or to work, if dress code allows! I'm all for "fashion over comfort", but sometimes...you just want to be comfy. THIS is a great way to do it!
stud earrings: trust me, these are the new chandelier earrings. so many styles and stones and price points...thank Princess Kate. SO preppy chic! :)
glittery flats: Tom's Shoes made them popular, (and i highly recommend them: buy a pair and they match it by buying a pair for a child in need!) but everyone from Target to Payless and high end brands are making glittery flats! So cute with dark denim and a graphic tee or you can dress them up with a blouse!
blue nails: the pool blue hue i'm currently wearing is one of my favorites! I'd never worn bright blue-ish turquoise nails before, but i'm obsessed! (my shade: Sally Hansen X-treme wear in 'blue me away') it's bright, fun, and surprisingly chic!
lastly, my Friday fave is love. Not just romantic love, but love in general. It's amazing the power of love and how good it can make you feel. Why do you think that 'Free Hugs' movement became so popular?! Being nice makes you feel good...and what better way to be nice than to show love to the ones you care for! It can uplift you on your darkest days, and when you feel good on the inside...you look good on the outside! :)
have a great weekend lovelies!
look for less! [Lauren Conrad for Lucky Magazine]
Lauren Conrad is one of my favorite fashion-inspiring celebs. Her style is very relaxed and casual, but at the same time chic, flirty, and sometimes sexy. Her look for the July/August cover of Lucky Magazine is SO on trend for fall, with the oversized "men's blazer" matched with a leather skirt and platforms. I love it, but the price is far out of my budget! So i found the look for less! None of the items are over $50 (okay, the blazer is, but only by a few bucks. A good blazer is hard to find!) ;) I also added tights and a more fall/winter shoe, because this look can easily get you through the next few months looking on trend and chic!
My favorite part of the look I put together: the bright mustardy, orange bag! An unexpected pop of color in your accessories really makes your outfit pop. (and i really love the black open toed booties!) tip: buy your blazer one or two sizes too large. just make sure it fits in your shoulders. [and roll up the sleeves to elbow length!] it should be long and a little boxy...as if you borrowed your boyfriend's blazer!
The links below are for every product I used to get this look. Just click on the description, and it'll take you right to the product! (side note: i apologize some of the prices are coming up in euros...ha!) The only things not available for purchase online are the items from H&M. (they REALLY need an online store!)
Hope you guys enjoy! xoxo

fall 2011: go BOLD!
Friday Faves!
I have been lazy on the blogs lately, but woke up this morning super excited and full of ideas. I'll probably blog all weekend! :) For now, though, I wanted to share with you some of my current favorite things! (I love reading other people's blogs to learn what they love, so I hope you do too!) *Happy Friday!*
Revlon 'Brow Fantasy' in dark blonde |
I'm also loving Revlon's "brow fantasy" - a brow pencil on one end, and brow gel on the other! 2 very easy steps to great looking eyebrows. Just don't get it in a too-dark-for-you shade: go one shade lighter than you THINK you need! ($8, drugstores)
Bath & Body Works 'wallflowers' they smell absolutely amazing! there's nothing better than walking into a fabulous smelling house, and these never disappoint. I have two in my condo at the moment, and i've loved all the scents i've used, but my favorite is Japanese Cherry Blossom - OMG delish! (bonus: the super-fun new diffuser thingies!) ;) ($6-20, B&BW)
braids: if you've seen me in person recently, I'm probably wearing some version of a braid. I am LOVING that these are on trend right now, and I hope they stay awhile! I recently learned how to do a fishtail braid (find out how using this video i found on youtube - VERY helpful!): how to: make a fishtail braid! But you don't have to be a braiding master at ALL to get this trendy look! Regular, tiny braids look so fresh! I love braiding my side-bang to the side, in one big or two little braids! It follows the very-now Bohemian look, which I love. which brings me to my next favorite: piling on the jewelry! mixing metals, expensive & cheap, beaded and metallic..anything goes!
my curly hair: I have naturally curly hair, which I feel like I've been fighting with my entire life. Recently (maybe because I'm getting older? haha) I've learned to fully embrace how special and "unique" my hair texture is. No, it's definitely not perfect, and we still have our "fights"...but with the right products I've noticed I wake up more excited to do my hair. I still love it straight, but it's A LOT of work, and in the summer falls flat and frizzy within minutes. I've found a great line by "Got2B" - their "kinky" products are fabulous and I've gotten lots more compliments on my curls recently. The important thing is to work WITH your hair, not against it!
oh wait..this isn't food! ;) |
Lauren Conrad: total girl-crush. I am in L.O.V.E with her style. It's so 'effortlessly cool' and girly, but modern and chic at the same time. Plus she seems to genuinely love fashion and beauty. Oh and yes...I've loved her since the 'Laguna Beach' days. Definitely my favorite 'fashion inspiration'!!
PS* her book Style is wonderful and timeless - the tips & tricks she has in that book will be useful no matter what year we're in!
ice cream chic!
When I was young I always wanted to wear white from head to toe - specifically in the summer. I remember being in the dressing room at Dillards with (what I thought at the time) was an amazing pair of disco-like white flares and a white and silver sweater (Stayin' Alive, anyone?!) and begging my mom to buy it for me to wear on the first day of school. I'll never forget she called me "the ice cream man". She never stifled my creativity and usually let me wear what I wanted. So the first day of 5th grade was spent in my white flares and white sweater with silver thread. ;)
This summer, all white is well, white-hot! The key is to keep it preppy with classic shapes and not too-tight fits, and alter the hue with at least one piece in the outfit. White makes your tan look tanner and your skin look even glowy-er than usual! Here's a couple of examples on how to rock all white this summer!

current obsessions!
Quick blog post about some fashion & beauty things I'm absolutely loving right now! Enjoy! :)
Wet 'N Wild eyeshadow trio in 'Walking on Eggshells'
Versatile, pigmented, everyday, gorgeous! Just some of the great things you could say about this eyeshadow trio. It was my first experience with Wet 'N Wild shadow, and another assumption about a product based only on pricepoint..(it's only $2.99 at Walgreens!)
I have played with this trio a LOT, and my favorite look is as follows: put the vanilla shade on your inner corner and bottom 1/2 of your lid with a small shader brush. Then take a larger, flat eyeshadow brush (or even the spongey-applicator it comes with!) and pack the pinky-nudeish color onto the rest of the lid, lightly blending the vanilla shadow and the pinky shadow together where they meet (so no harsh lines.). Then take a crease brush (any fatter, rounded tip brush) and add the brown onto your crease and blend it out from the outer corner of your crease to the middle -- don't go too far in or it'll look harsh. I then take another brow highlight color (anything lighter than your skin color and not too shimmery) right underneath the brow bone.
swatches of shadows :) |
Tip: for a smokier look, I pack the brown color on the outer third of my lid, then add a brown shadow a shade darker over it, and blend it out.
Sonia Kashuk 'Blending Sponge'
If you follow a lot of what's going on in the beauty world, you know about the Beauty Blender sponge. It's hot pink, sold at Sephora or online, and it's THIRTY DOLLARS. For a sponge! Makeup artists and beauty guru's alike swear by it's usefullness and say it's worth the money, but for me, I cannot justify spending $30 on a sponge you can use for a few weeks (months at best) and toss.
But at Target last month I spotted this blue beauty: the Sonia Kashuk version of the Beauty Blender, the "blending sponge". I can best describe it as a firm sponge, not particularly absorbent. It also has a little bit of a "tire" smell. You know what I mean. haha. I'm not sure why the smell, but this little sponge does some serious work. The best way I've found to use it: wet the sponge and squeeze it until no more water comes out. It will be just a little damp. Put some liquid foundation on the back of your hand and dip your blending sponge into it on the fat side. Apply all over your face in a stippling motion. When you get to smaller areas you'd like to cover, like the sides of your nose or under your eyes, dip foundation with the smaller, pointed side of the sponge. It can transform even the cheapest foundation and gives you a truly airbrushed-like look. The best way to use it is to gradually build up coverage: by using it wet it's going on more sheer, thus more natural looking. It also seems to "seep into" your skin better than your fingers, a brush, or a disposable makeup sponge. For $9.99, it's a price you won't have a heart attack about, and I also won't cry in a month or two when I have to replace it.
Tip: to clean sponge (I do after about 3 uses), use a VERY SMALL amount of baby shampoo. Non irritating to your face, and does the job!
Mossimo (oversized) denim button down!
As always, thanks for reading! (:
